Hi, I am having a few problems with my Macbook Pro on 10.5.8

I performed a software update including (I think) iTunes, Safari and Java. It restarted automatically and immediately came up with an error message for Safari - didn't take much notice as I use Firefox anyway.

I now have problems with four applications: Safari, iTunes, Mail and Software update. All unexpectedly quit when I try to open them. I tried to install the combo update but came up with this error message: "Install Failed. The source media you are installing from is damaged" (grab attached).

I went through the Apple discussions help and nothing there seemed to work.

The error message for Mail is as follows:

Process: Mail [434]
Path: /Applications/Mail.app/Contents/MacOS/Mail
Identifier: com.apple.mail
Version: ??? (???)
Build Info: Mail-9360000~1

If it helps I can C&P the errors from the other apps?

One other note: The laptop is very slow. Ample space on the HD. Even when turning on and logging in the wheel appears when trying to type.

Will this be a case of a complete restore or is there something I am missing?

I have searched, but have found very little information and virtually no one with a similar problem!

Please can someone shed some light on this! Any help or advice will be appreciated.

Update: Capture One has the same problem - unexpectedly quits when trying to open. I imagine this will be the situation with a lot of other applications I have not tried to open!]

Also forgot to mention - Disk Utility crashes when attempting to Repair, Verify etc.
