Problems connecting a monitor to my Macbook

I'm soon ordering a dell monitor, but in the meantime, I decided to hook up an old monitor to my macbook. I picked up a mini-dvi to vga adapter and tried to hook it up to my Hp f1703, but when I try to turn on the monitor, it won't turn on. I'm assuming it's busted, I guess i'll have to test it on another computer. Can you think of any other reason why it wouldn't be working?

Is it plugged in? Is there a standby light (usually amber)?

If it won't power up, the computer has nothing to do with it.

Can you access the OSD (On Screen Display) when nothing is connected to it?

There is no standby light, the monitor is completely non-responsive, and it is plugged into the computer. The only wire coming from the monitor is the one connecting it to the computer, and I would have assumed it needed a power supply, but i don't see a port for one so i guess it doesnt.

ALL monitors require AC power. What's the make/model of your monitor?

Your monitor runs on 12V DC power and requires an external AC to DC adapter.

It is not working because there is no power going to the unit. You need to find the AC/DC adapter that came with your monitor and there should be a DC-input jack somewhere along the underside.
