Hi, Im trying to edit the hosts file in 10.5.8 on Macbook Pro to add Server addresses.

Once i have edited the hostfile and use: sudo cp Desktop/hosts /etc to return the hostfile to etc it requests the administrator password, however the keyboard becomes unresponsive. I have tried using an external usb keyboard with similar result.

All suggestions gratefully received.

As your doing this in Terminal, you do know that when typing the password it won't actually display anything, not even stars, for security.

Have you just tried typing your password and pressing return?

Thanks for the reply.

OK,tried that. The hosts file remains on the desktop. Should this action move the hosts file from the desktop or is it 'copied' back?

Apologies for the basic questions - new to terminal.
