Problems hooking to Dell monitor

So I have a dell ultra sharp U2412m monitor that 1900x1200 with a built in usb hub. It worked fine with my MBA using a DisplayPort to mini displayport cable and usb to hub. But I haven't found a way to connect to my 2016 retina MacBook. I tried apples av hub with hdmi to display port cable, but my monitor wouldn't recognize it and not turn on. So I tried apple vga adapter and that works, the monitors turns on and the usb hub works, but I can't set the proper resolution, best I can get is 1920x1080. Any ideas? So far I have spent close to $150 in adapters, hesitant to buy more without knowing for sure it'll work.

A DisplayPort can work as an HDMI port, but an HDMI port doesn't work as a DisplayPort. That means you can't use the DisplayPort because Apple's AV adapter only has an HDMI port. What you need is HDMI to DVI, such as this or this one.
