Problems hooking up Macbook to LCD TV

Hello I recently bought the "old" macbook 2.4ghz 2GB ram 160 GB Harddrive. Today I bought the DVI adapter from Apple and a DVI to HDMI cord and hooked it up to my 32 inch Vizio. Theres where I ran into my first problem. Only the background appears on my TV, none of the apps or windows do, is there a setting I need to put my Macbook on to correct this? Any help is appreciated! Thanks

you need to drag the windows over the the LCD, or turn mirroring on. go to the display settings in system preferences.
