I could use some advice regarding importing to the Photos App on my new 16” MBP M1 pro 10/16/16.
I’m trying to import photos from my wife’s iPhone 12 Max into my Photos App (our joint system library) on the MBP using the lightning cable. Her iPhone is plugged in and “Trusted,” and is shown in the Photos app, but the loading process appears inconsistent. It’s getting stuck on “Preparing to Import from iPhone 12 Max,” which seems to take a long time (20 minutes before I gave up). What seems to get it to start loading thumbnails is restarting the mac with the iPhone connected and then opening the Mac Photos App. The thumbnails of new photos to be imported (about 6000) then begin to quickly load after only a minute, however, they only continue loading if I scroll down over the pages of blank thumbnails. This used to occur periodically on my old late 2008 15” MBP and I thought surely the new 16” M1 pro would be able to handle USB imports handily, but I am feeling rather disappointed right now at the lack of performance in this particular task.
Perhaps using a lightning cable is the bottleneck here as this USB 2.0 technology is slow and hasn’t really changed in years since my 2008 MBP? Perhaps it’s that I’m using FileVault on the new MBP and its encrypting as its loading? However, none of this explains the inconsistency of being able to connect/load quickly sometimes while other times it’s just stuck. I know there are more efficient ways of importing (e.g., AirDrop), but the USB route advantage is that the Photo app sees what I've already downloaded and gives me the simple option of downloading all photos/videos that are new.
Any thoughts on what might be going on?
