Ok I just reinstalled Leopard (erase and install after making backup with superduper).

When I open Mail I get the message:
Mail can’t open because its index is read-only.
This file is located in Michael MBP:Users:Michael:Library:Mail:Envelope Index. If this file is on your computer, use the Get Info panel in the Finder to change your permissions for this file to “Read & Write.” If this file is located on a network server, contact the server administrator. After your permissions are changed, open Mail again.

ok so when i go to that "envelope index" file it is about 6.3mb, when i check permissions, system and everyone are already read & write, there is also an (unknown) option that says read only but won't let me change it. if i move the "envelope index" file to the desktop and try to open mail, it creates a new envelope index file, but one that is way smaller, like 220k, and then nothing happens at all, mail just sits there, and i have to force quit it.

also when i try to open address book, it bounces on the dock for a second, then closes.

please help! i have to install on 2 more macs still

I have a MBP C2D 2.33
