got dual core 2.8, 10gb memory and 8800

Trying to play a .mkv 1080p file with vlc, quicktime using perian and mplayer
all fail at doing a good job. vlc does the best job but drops frames, so annoying.

I didn't have this problem a few weeks ago before i reinstalled osx.

any tips?

edit:: these players work they just dont play them smoothly

oh and Happy Holidays!! =]

Mkv is a pita container...

Sometimes this works a little better for VLC : copy movie file, change extension to .mpg or .mpeg, open in VLC .

What's with people, not searching the forums and the net?

tip: Flac

I did search both... I already tried all the options everyone has listed here except for changing the file extension. Whats up with people not reading the original post.

How is Flac, a lossless audio format, a tip?

Try using Plex. It's really codec-rich and is the best playback software on the Mac when it comes to 1080p high-bit rate content. A learning curve at first, but not too bad. Plus, it does DTS passthrough.

thanks plex plays the files with no problem, its a bit weird of an interface. cant use a mouse? lol

Plex is the best player I've found so far on the Mac that doesn't require crap loads of tweaking to get working well.

Yeah Plex is working great, I tried a few more files on it. Thank agian.

It's more like a complete media program, kinda bulky if you just want a movie player, but i'm not complaining vlc and others need to get their act together

Plex is a home entertainment app, similar, but far superior to Front Row. That's its target. You can even launch other apps from within it, such as games. Pretty nice and only getting better. It is what drives our home entertainment system. Apple should be embarrassed that a dozen guys who work for beer are showing them up.

MKV is a junk container, inefficient and a resource hog.

I don't know why people continue to use it when FAR better formats exist.
