I, like a complete idiot, have forgotten my administrator password. I've tried using the install disk. When I go to Utilities > Reset password, it says select disc from which to reset password but only the install disk is listed. My startup disk isn't listed. I really don't want to have to do a clean install if I can avoid it. Am I doing something wrong?

Please help!

instead of doing that, boot into single user mode by pressing command+s on the keyboard. type
Code:
mount -uw /
with that exact formatting i kept forgetting to the backslash... then in 10.5 type
Code:
launchtl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.DirectoryServicesLocal.plist
or if your in 10.4 type
Code:
sh /etc/rc
then type
Code:
dscl .
Code:
cd /Users
it will say:
Code:
New Password:
then type
Code:
exit
Code:
reboot
