problems streamlining Mac to Tv

I have no trouble connecting my HMDI cable to a PC laptop and TV to watch movies from Netflix but somehow a Mac is different. I bought the HMDI adaptor cable but I only see the 'space' page on my TV, not the netflix screen on my Mac. Does anyone know what I need to click on my MAC?

How do you have the TV set up in System Preferences>Displays?

If you mean you're seeing the desktop on the TV, why not just drag the window you want to watch over to it?
