Problems syncing iphone4+ipad in iTunes 9.2

I am having trouble with itunes and iphone4+ipad. I am finding that iphone4 apps will get inadvertently installed on the ipad, and vice versa. Deletions also occur.

Is there a way to sync the two devices smoothly in itunes?
