Problems with ATSServer (and large PDFs?)

Every time I open large PDFs (ebooks, >1000 pages) the ATSServer process starts to eat up a lot of CPU time, >50% on both cores.

Anyone know why this might be? I presumed it would be something to do with indexing the document, but apparently that's not what ATSServer's job is. I don't remember this happening under Tiger...
