I tried to plug a headphone and mic head set into my powerbook, my problem is that when I switch audio line-in port on there is no sound coming through and the there is no indication of anything being picked up on the small input level graph.

As a line-in port instead of a mic-in port, it requires that the signal coming in be amplified. You'd need some sort of preamp solution like Griffin's iMic in order to boost the signal to line level.

Ok. I have a couple of options I guess. First, get a pre-amp set up for my headset. Secondly, I wonder if I bought a headset that plugs into the USB port whether I would need anything else?

Looking at prices I think both would cost about the same.
