Problems with External DVD burner

I bought a LaCie 300981U Dual Layer DVD burner with Lightscribe. The company's website (and the owner's manual) boast Mac compatibility, but I'll be darned if I can get it to work.

My system:
G4 ibook 800mhz
80 gig HD
640 mb RAM
OS 10.3.9

After I hooked the burner up, I put a blank DVD in and it spit it right out and gave me a message that the drive was unsupported. I then put one of the CD ROMs that came with the burner in, and it read the disc. Under system profiler, the USB connection listed the burner and said that burning was unsupported. That leads me to believe that this burner cannot and will not work for me.

Is there anything I don't know here? Anyone else have this burner?
