I recently upgraded from 10.6.8 to Yosemite 10.10 and have been experiencing problems using Gmail when in Safari. Anytime I open gmail and then open a web link in one of my messages, I am unable to "back" out of the link site (using the arrows at top left) and go back to the gmail home page. I have to close out of the site, and then reopen Safari, and then open gmail again. Any advice?

When I click any URL in gmail in Safari it opens in a new window or tab, so there is no "back" to go back to via the arrow. The list of email is in another tab or window. I think that's the default behavior.
