Okay, since I've been using 10.3, I've had non-stop trouble with the Help Viewer App. The first problem is that I got a refurb eMac, which included only the 10.3 update CD's - so I couldn't directly install 10.3. I had to install 10.2, and after finding out some unsavory things about the update cd (I wanted a partition, which required erasing the drive. after erasing the drive using the install cd, it said that i didn't have 10.2 installed, so I couldn't install 10.3. even though it recognized that when i booted off of the cd, 10.2 was installed, and i used the installer disc to do my partition). Soooo, afraid that I was going to have to install 10.2 again, I did an archive and install (I later found out on my partition that erase and install worked just the way it was supposed to). Well, I didn't notice at first, but the help viewer app was *not* the 10.3 help viewer - it was the 10.2 help viewer. it even came up with the 'what's new in 10.2' screen.
I hadn't really noticed that, but one day, the help viewer app got really really slow. After looking around a bit on my second install (partition 2), I realized what was going on. I updated both partitions to the same version of 10.3, using combo updates. then i moved over files from the partition to the main drive. that worked out just fine... after deleting my plist files, everything was as it should be, and snappy at that. so quick I couldn't believe it.
buuut, every week or two, it gets crazy slow again. I repaired permissions after 10.3.6, and i had a page and a half of permissions repaired, all related to the help system.
after that, things were snappy again, for about a week.
and then today, I finally got around to 10.3.7. After the update, I checked out the help system, and it was sloooow.
so i repaired permissions. and the result?

217 *pages* of repaired permissions. most of those are help system.

so what's going on here? is there anything I can do to get my help system back to normal? it's really frustrating when I have to get rid of my plist files every week if I want to look up a question I have from time to time...
