Problems With June 2009 17" UMBP

Hi All,

I have a June 2009 17" 2.8 UBMP. The Software Updates are up to date. I am experiencing the following issues:

1) Lots of Regular Spinning Wheels - last up to a minute
2) Sometimes Apps just quit
3) Sometimes Windows Just Resize
4) Regular Screen Lock Ups - Eg: When moving cursor over something
5) Multiple Trackpad Issues:
- Cursor regularly goes where you do not want it to
- Trackpad does not respond
- Highlights everything blue
- Single tap selections regularly require multiple taps or does not work
- Double tap items regularly require multiple taps or does not work
- Big delay between input & action
- Dragging difficult with sometimes no release
- Cursor jumps so one ends up missing what they selected and end up selecting/opening something else
- Sometimes trackpad does not respond at all or executes a completely different thing
- Some Trackpad Functions do not seem to work.

I have tried a PRAM reset twice and did a Verify & Repair Permissions which still shows that permissions differ even after being repaired which does not make sense to me - see:

It sound like I have many of the problems the folks with the 1.7 Firmware Update are experiencing which is only supposed to affect the 13" & 15" models. Can anyone help me get rid of these issues? I am kind of upset that many problems that plagued Apple when I had a 2008 MBP are still thriving today - I had to replace my previous MBP for just this reason only to find out that the latest and newest sets have issues like this too and finding a solution is, for novices like me anyway, a absolute nightmare. I really hope you folks can help!

The logs you have don't seem to indicate anything that would cause problems.

Try running the hardware diagnostics (reboot while holding the 'D' key down - be patient while waiting for the diagnostic tool to start).

You could check the console log for any tell-tale messages (the console viewer is in the 'Utilities' folder under Applications).

Have you installed any software that could cause problems, such as drivers or software that directly interacts with the hardware? If so, a re-install of MacOSX may clear the problem.

You should have free phone-access to apple care if the laptop is less than 3 months old...

if you're close to an Apple store, make a genius appt and have them boot up your mac with an external drive.

If you're not close, but have access to a second harddrive or an external drive, you could load up the mac os onto it and boot from it to see if it's hardware related or not.
