Problems with mail icon

Hi I have noticed that my mail icon has a faint shadowy circle with apple icon showing. Can anyone tell me what this means and how I can put it right. Also on my partners desktop the mail and iphoto icons have disappeared altogether.

Any suggestions what might have happened!
