Does anyone know why disk space is not released when I delete a file from my maxtor external harddrive? The file name is removed however the space it used is not.

I've tried to work it out but failed. Can anyone help?

The file is still there until you empty the trash while the drive is plugged in. Have you emptied the trash?

Just tried it and it works. I can't believe that it remembers whats been deleted even after an external device is removed and reatached. I'm very impressed. Thanks.

That's what I was doing. I guess I'll probably experiance the same problem you have when I next put it into my windows PC.

Windows and OS X store deleted files differently. Make sure you emtpy the trash in OS X and empty the recycle bin in Windows. I'd give it another try.
