I want to connect a headset to an old beige G3 (266 MHz) that runs Mac OS X 10.2.6. Unfortunately, the microphone doesn't work. I don't quite understand why:

  • The whole headset works on my PowerBook (headphones + microphone)
  • The headphones part works on the beige G3
  • If I plug in the headphones as microphone, I can record just fine with Audacity on both channels (you knew that you can use headphones as a mike, didn't you  ).
  • Once I plug in the microphone into the microphone input, no signal is recorded
  • The headphones jack and microphone jack look identical (same length etc.)

I'm really stumped. Anybody know what's the problem?

Well, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to record using the headphones. So it seems everything is turned on okay.
