problems with new widescreen monitor

Hi i just recently got a hanns-g 19' widescreen monitor to hook up to my macbook and it was working fine last night with the macbook closed and it being on 1440 x 900. Today i took my macbook to class and came home and now the only thing it will work on well is 1280 x 768. It won't even detect a 1440 x 900 setting. I did the thing where i close the macbook and unplug and replug a USB cord so i don't know what the problem can be. Please help.

Did you sleep your MB before unplugging the Mini DVI adapter? I know with the Mini VGA adapter, my iBook didn't much like me unplugging it while it was up and running.
