So I've increasingly noticed a problem with my 2008 Unibody Macbook's optical drive- it takes a disc, then, instead of reading it, spins it up and down repeatedly and refuses to eject it unless I do the restart while holding down the trackpad trick.

The odd thing is though, it tends to only do this for some discs. I almost never have this issue with audio CD's, or movies I watch on DVD, but now I am trying to install MATLAB for a college computing course and I'm encountering this problem. I've tried doing it on both my OS X and Windows XP partitions, and each encounter the same issue.

Does anyone know what the problem could be? I really hope this isn't the optical drive failing, since the warranty has long ago expired.
