Hi all,

I've never been much of a fan of using system migration, purely because I like the chance to rebuild my system from scratch and get rid of the accumulated gunk of the years that may be plaguing various system folders.

Anyway, I just bought a new iMac to replace my Mac mini as it fades into obsolescence, and decided to give it a whirl and see if it has changed or improved since I last used it, at a friend's recommendation.

However, since doing this I've had a persistent problem with applications presenting a warning message every time I open them—the message you get when you first try to open an app after downloading it. It doesn't affect all of them, just a few, but unfortunately they're used regularly and sometimes they're apps that open at login. I can't turn the computer on, walk away and return expecting everything including Quicksilver and the EvernoteHelper background process to be running and ready to go.

The warning message is:

"Quicksilver" is an application which was downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it? Firefox downloaded this file on 14 August 2008.

A problem that seems to me to be quite related is that when I try to clear private data from Firefox, such as cookies, history, cache, and stored passwords, it doesn't work. It doesn't throw up an error, it just does its usual thing like nothing is wrong. I'm guessing that something in the cache is still telling OS X that certain apps were just downloaded and haven't yet been opened, but since I can't clear it, nothing changes. It also indicates that the system can't modify the cache (I'm just guessing, I'm not sure if this downloaded application info is stored there), and that is reflected in some difficulty with storing new passwords.

I've also got a bit of a problem with TextExpander—it's present in Login Items under the Accounts Sys Preferences pane, but sometimes it doesn't start up with the system. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't—quite erratic.

It doesn't seem to be coming good and I'm at a loss as to how to fix this. If you've got any ideas that may help, I'm grateful for that. Thanks!
