Everyone says it's not the best idea to buy brand new products to avoid being the 'guinea pigs' as such - was just wondering if people actually KNOW of any previous issues, particularly with iMacs - and state them if you can :)

I have had both the 2009 and 2011 27" iMac and both of them have suffered from smudges on the screen. There are a few theories such as heat issues etc. but my guess are the fans suck up any dust into the machine and over time this accumulates in the LCD mesh / matrix as the screen has not been sealed/isolated from the innards of the machine. We have also had this happen to two iMacs at my work. I'll hasten to add my home environment is a regular clean house and my iMac lives in my study. The work ones are in air conditioned environments.

I took my 2011 iMac in yesterday for a full screen replacement, the "Genius" didn't even bother to switch it on and check, just nodded and booked it it in immediately.

My advice with the iMac is take out Applecare.

You're still covered for a period though without Applecare aren't you? Is it just 30 days?

In the UK you get a standard 12 month warranty which would cover this. Personally I think it rather shocking that this issue exists at all, Apple should really be offering repairs beyond the standard warranty as it is obviously a design flaw of the iMac. This design flaw has been prevalent for at least the last 3 generation (2009), when they introduced the 27" iMac.

So in theory this problem will be non existant with the new laminated screens.

Is that the only notable case of a newly released re-design issue? Don't see what the worry is about if that's the case.

Well, with the new screen design we can be sure that at least dust is no longer a problem. I would wait at least a month.

Until they do a tear down not sure the new lamination will solve the issue. Isn't the lamination just the front and the issue is due to the screen at the rear not being sufficiently sealed/isolated from the innards of the machine.

The new screen construction should stop the "dust problem". Whether it can solve the problems associated with the heat from the innards, is a different question. I don't believe it can, but I hope that they've thought about it this time and addressed it somehow.

Laminating the screen to the glass means there simply isn't any room for dust to creep in.

Pretty odd this thread hasn't got many replies, yet everyone is so concerned about buying new products.

Maybe I have this wrong but isn't the screen laminated to the front glass, or is it also sealed at the rear where the dust enters the LCD "matrix/mesh". The dust never got trapped between the screen and glass but within the "matrix" itself where I believe it got there from the rear as the fans, overtime, drew it in. The issue is that Apple never isolated the rear of the screen from the innards of the iMac.
