I keep having an issue with my rMBP and my HP Deskjet F4280. My macbook recognizes the printer, and when I go to print something it says that the document is being printed and even shows a status bar, but the whole time nothing at all is happening with my printer. My macbook thinks its printing but really nothing is happening. I have tried waiting for the printer to react, even once let it wait for 20 minutes, still nothing. How on earth can i solve this problem? Its really starting to stress me out. I am running OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 if it is relevant.

Try restarting the printer and router, in addition to your Mac.

Do other machines work okay with the printer?

Yes we have two other laptops on windows 7 that work perfectly. I'm almost positive its not a problem with the printer, but something on mavericks

Also its not a wifi printer, just runs through usb

Try removing it in System Preferences and readding it. How many printers are installed on the machine?

This is the only one, kinda funny cause it doesn't work but yea its the only printer i've tried using it with

Disconnect the printer. Then click :apple: --> System Preferences --> Print & Fax. Then go to a white space under your printer, hold Ctrl and click. Choose "Reset Printing System".
