Well, we got root and all that working on my buddy's comp. But now he cant shutdown or go into sleep. He can, but sleep wont wake up, and shutdown seems like sleep. On Shutdown, it logs out and the screen goes blank, but the computer is still running. You can even turn caps lock on and off. Its wierd.

Sounds to me like your power management is messed up. Look here for some guidance - I don't know what Mac model you have, so I didn't point you to a particular article.

Sorry, its a G5 iMac. 17" 1.8 ghz. He has 512 mb ram. Funny thing is, I was looking at the system specs, and the second ram slot is empty. Should he run 2 ram slots instead of 1?

If so, what ram works good with the Apple?

Did you BTO the machine with 1 512 MB RAM chip? If so, or you got third party RAM and replaced what was in there, that would explain the second slot being empty.

EDIT: I suppose a PRAM reset and NVRAM reset would be worth a try. Linky

Excellent, we'll give that a try tonight.
See the problem is, I'm a PC user, and my friend is an idiot.
So between the 2 of us, his Mac has a hard time doing the "right thing"

Thanks for you help, any and all is appreciated.
