I bought a new Seagate SATA drive and put it in an external USB enclosure to use exclusively for Time Machine.
On two occasions now the drive has become completely corrupt, and I got the message "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" when switching it on. I had to reformat it to get it back, but obviously I lost all of my backups.
On the first occasion, I may have forgotten to manually eject the external drive before switching it off. On the second occasion, it simply disappeared from my iMac after returning from sleep, so I turned it off and back on to try and get it back.
It all seems a bit fragile to me. Should this happen? Should I really be losing the entire volume even if I don't eject it properly (rather than just losing the file that it is possibly writing at the time), or could there be a problem with Leopard, Time Machine, the hard disk or the enclosure? I'm tempted to just buy a new external drive, preferably one which will automatically sleep when my iMac sleeps (if that's possible), but it would be pointless spending more money if this is going to continue to happen.
Is it my fault for being a bit careless with the drive, or is anyone else suffering from the same problem?
All suggestions gratefully received!
