Problems with USB extender..

Just a quick question..I have a apple wired keyboard hooked up to my iMac through a USB extender cable. I have some problems with it however. They are:

1) When I boot up my mac, I have to plug the keyboard directly to hold option so I can choose what disk to boot into. Is there anyway I can fix this?

2) When I use a wired mouse connected to the keyboard through the extender. I have to unplug and plug the mouse back in for OSX to recognise it..

no clue but in regard to the keyboard extender cable, it pisses me off how you can only use it for the keyboard and not other things because of that stupid bump.

I dont have that problem, I just have a 2m long USB male to USB female?
