problems with video players

hello,

I recently bought a used macbook pro os x 10.6 from the US (I live in Cyprus).

I installed and uninstalled vlc several times because it cannot play anything. I just hear the sound of the video but I can't see it.. I also tried quicktime and it seems to have problems also. It only plays wav files.

Does anyone has any idea of what the problem is?
