Hey all,

I am looking to buy one of the new 15-inch MBPs. I do some video editing and music production. Avid, FCP, Logic, etc. I was wondering if I were to get the 2.0ghz i7, how big of a difference in speed is that to the 2.2 or 2.3ghz i7? Is it a dramatic difference? Are there any actual speed tests with all three?

If the 2.0ghz adequetly does the job, I'd love to save 500 bucks!

Well 2.2 vs 2.3 is not much of a difference.
5% more clock speed and a bit more LLC but that often has a negligible effect in most cases. Turbo max is 3.3 and 3.4 which is only 3% difference.

The 2Ghz is a little more than the 10% apart from 2.2 because the max Turbo of the former is 2.9Ghz and the latter 3.3Ghz. That is 400 Mhz and thus with Turbo the difference increases.
The 2.2 is IMO justified because of the 6750 more than anything. If gives you almost twice the performance of the 6490 in modern games. 100% is well worth the money if you use it for this.

I have done a small research about 2720QM vs 2820QM (2.2 ghz vs 2.3 ghz)
The other difference is that 2820QM has 8MB of L3 cache, while 2720QM has 6MB.
The conclusion is that the difference in performance is usually ~5%,
sometimes goes a bit higher, but never above 10%.
Considering that 2820QM is almost twice as expensive as 2720QM,
and the difference is small, I don't recommend this option.
Know that CPUs cannot be upgraded later, but if, after several years,
the performance will not be enough for you, you will probably buy the new computer.
