I was using a pro display XDR with a 14 inch M1 Pro MacBook pro for a few years with no issue; using the apple thunderbolt 4 cable that came with the display.

Now, whenever all of a suddenly, whenever I plug the MacBook in, the display only comes on for a few seconds and then goes black. The laptop stops charging when it goes black, then resumes in a few seconds, then the cycle repeats indefinitely. If the laptop has >85% charge, it seems to work fine, but if I plug anything else into my laptop (like an iPhone to charge or whatever) then it starts again. Currently running Ventura 13.3 and the latest firmware of the prodisplay XDR.

I have tried:

  • Factory resetting MacBook Pro 14, restoring to OSX Monterey, I tried the beta of Ventura 13.4.
  • My partners M1 MacBook Air and my iPad Pro 12.9 M2 both work, the display works absolutely fine.
  • I took it into apple, they couldn't replicate the fault on any of their monitors and there were no faults with the thunderbolt ports.
  • I bought another TB4 cable, same issue.
  • I tried another pro display XDR power cable, as well as changing the fuse.
  • I bought a Mac Studio, works fine - seems like an expensive solution and has horribly high pitched fan noise.
The only thing I can think of is that there is some issue when it comes to the ProDisplay XDR providing power to the laptop and the display but it's strange that it works on all the other devices I've tried. I'm reluctant to believe that a display that is just a few years old is already faulty.

I've tried all the suggestions to unplug everything, but nothing works.

Anyone had a similar problem or got any ideas of things I could try? I was perfectly happy with the performance of my MacBook and I don't feel like keeping a really noisy Mac Studio that I don't like when I had a perfectly working setup.

Thanks for any help.
