professional level scanner recommendations...

I have an HP scanner on mydesk, and my boss told me to be on the lookout for a better one. The budget is not exactly huge (around $500), so I don't think a drum scanner is really the direction we're going, here. Any ideas? Any personal experiece with a good scanner?

i have read really good reviews of the canon high end flat bed scanners, almost comparable to professional drum scanners and sometimes surpassing their quality, and they are in the $500 range too, but i just cant remember the model numbers off the top of my head.
