I've been using Handbrake for converting stuff to avi for use in my divx-compat dvd player.

Works fine, most times, but I usually fail with mkv - which is jerky when replayed on Mac or in the player.

Wondershare appears (I only tried once) to do the job ok - and I'm wondering if there are other alternatives?

Avidemux I believe will do it. I know that MKVtools will. That is what it was originally designed for. Ffmpegx should also do it, though it's a little old and some codecs might give it trouble. I'm sure if you search at a site like Macupdate.com, some more apps will pop up.

Thanks.

I'd forgotten Avidemux - which I currently use for joining files and 'getting out of trouble' with stuff which has audio which won't play.

I'd stopped using ffmegx in favor of Handbrake as the latter seemed easier and more reliable.
