Program to import video from Panasonic camera

Hello guys. I have a Lumix G3 camera. It records 1080p in AVCHD formats, and I have been using iMovies to import the videos. iMovie is great. It's simple and fast, but the imported videos(.mov format) cannot be played on anything besides Quicktime player, not even VLC(I get a 'icod' not supported erorr message). I'm hoping to find a program that can import videos to a more common video format like .avi and .mp4. Thanks.
