Programs start to open and then disappear...

Limewire, Safari, MacHelp ....

With these programs (and a few others) I click the icon, they bounce as if they're going to open, and then nothing... Safari at least gives me the option to send an error report, but all the others close without a trace. I found an old thread that suggested I reset permissions... but when I tried to follow those instructions, that disappeared and would not open as well. I'm very frustrated, can anyone help me?? Thank you!

They are crashing.

Restart. Still does it?
Check the Report button for clues as to why they are crashing.

Yes, I have tried restarting, still crashes. I copied a small portion of the "submit report" screen, does this mean anything to you?

And what kind of Mac is this?

Yes this is from the Desk Utility crash... this is an iBook G4 Mac OS X Version 10.3.9 Processor 1.07 GHz Power PC G4. Safari gives me a report but Limewire doesn't, it just shuts off.

Did you happen to run any utilities recently, like Monolingual, or something to remove unneeded languages from your Mac?

To be honest this was my friends computer... she gave it to me because she got a new one. This was running fine until late yesterday. Im not comfortable enough with it to "run" anything because Im used to a PC. I went through and deleted a lot of her files (pictures, music etc) I guess its possible I could have removed something by accident? If I had a PC I know this is fixed by a system restore but like I said this Mac thing is new to me. Firefox works without a problem, AIM works without issue. I just had a problem getting into "Accounts" in the System Preferences. Is it possible I deleted something? And is that fixable?

Anything is possible, but also, anything you may have accidently "deleted", would probably end in much more catastrophic problems than applications crashing.

Normal troubleshooting dictates, log in as another user (create one) and see if the problems follow you there. If they do, then your best bet is probably a complete reinstall of the OS. If they do not, then it's an easier problem to solve since it's relegated to your 'normal' user.

Unfortunately, there is no magic bullet 'click-here-your-fixed'.

Unfortunately I cannot log in as another user either... I am the only user name on the computer AND I am unable to get into the Accounts section of System Preferences, it just crashed the same way all these other programs have. Thank you for your help, it is very much appreciated!

Hopefully you didn't do something foolish like use Monolingual before reading the warnings.

Doing something in the mass delete can be just as bad, since on the Mac there are some trivial but important files in the root directory.

I know one alias is sitting there that redirects to the account password, delete this and it'll stop you from logging in.

Some of those deleted files regenerate, and Apple has hidden most of them now. But you can probably cause some damage in other directories.
