Hi. I’m having trouble with my mid-2012 MBP. I put a new Samsung SSD back in March 2018 and it was working great until last night. It was acting slow and strange. So I restarted my computer and was stuck with the prohibitory sign. I tried all the different reboot methods (I.e. command/R, shift, command etc..) none seemed to work.

Eventually I tried erasing and reformatting the hard drive but got errors. I thought maybe the hard drive had problems so I bought another new SSD and got errors when reformatting that one as well. It seems like my MBP doesn’t want to finish the process of reformating or even internet recovery. Nothing seems to work.

Issue is relating to the SATA cable. It has a very high failure rate on your model.

If you replace the SATA cable, it'll be working perfectly from there. Make sure you get a new, good quality one, rather than one from eBay. Let me know if you need any guidance and which country you're in and I'll find a link for you.

Best wishes.

It's a little expensive on iFixit, but at least quality is guaranteed and you get a lifetime warranty for the cable: https://www.ifixit.com/Store/Mac/MacBook-Pro-13-Inch-Unibody-Mid-2012-Hard-Drive-Cable/IF163-041-1

Here's the guide for how to replace it: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Pro+13-Inch+Unibody+Mid+2012+Hard+Drive+Cable+Replacement/10379

I'm assuming you've got the 13", if it's the 15" let me know.
