Got the second ethernet cable strung from the gigabit switch in my garage today. Also, got two long extension cords and powerstrips set up.

That meant plugging in the 10/100 switch and the iMac. In this part of the garage, I'm not concerned about these Macs having gigabit (only the Mac Mini which I have previously shown).

iMac came right up. I sent off the video card for the G5, so I need to install my FireGL X3, which requires additional molex power. Another project for another day. But at least I now have power and connectivity in this part of the garage. I also need a new monitor for the IIci before I can turn that back on.

Cleanup continues.

Oh, the long shot you see is me sitting in the Gamemaster's chair with the monitor of the Mac Mini in front of me. I conduct any gaming sessions from there (think Dungeons and Dragons when I mention gaming).

Looks like I lied about that project for another day…

I looked up the optical drive removal instructions and it was pretty easy to pull, so I did. One Molex splitter later and with the drive reinserted and my FireGL X3 installed the G5 booted right up.

@LightBulbFun. Sir. This is the FireGL X3 you directed me to the eBay auction for, for my Quicksilver. It was brand new and I never get it to work with the QS so I held on to it.

This is the first time I've ever used it and it's working. This is I think almost 5 years later. Very happy it's working.

PS, had to remove the second monitor. It only has a VGA hookup. Time to hit the Goodwill again.

hah very cool to see it does work in the end and that you where actually flashing it properly back then! :)

ah memories, cant believe that was 5 years ago now!

BTW looking at your system profiler shot, dont forget to install the ATI 4.5.7 displays driver, it looks like you dont have that installed yet, and the reduced ROM requires it for full card functionality :)

And the final piece, the 12" PowerBook G4. Needed some attention from Diskwarrior for some reason but all good now.

Copying off old Dropbox items to the server. This is how I know it's fast ethernet. 2+ hours for 8GB.

That iMac G3 sitting up there makes me nervous, it looks like it could tumble at any time! :p

Looks good! That's quite a large network switch for the few computers there, but I suppose it's better to have breathing room for growth in the future. Any plans for your machines that are running Tiger to NetBoot them from your server so you don't have to manage multiple setups?

At first I worried too, but it's solid and there's no danger to the table the G5 supporting it is sitting on.

I actually made a mistake. It's a hub, so a dumb network device. That said, it cost me $5 at Goodwill about 12-13 years ago. I got two of them and this is the one that turned out to work, the other one didn't.

I prefer having too many ports instead of not enough. So most of my networking equipment is 8 ports minimum. Things add up though when your using both ethernet ports on a computer and have other devices. My intention for this area is for it to be a testing and repair station. It's going to be where I work on my devices. With the hub right there it's easy just to plug in a cable quickly.

As to netbooting, I hadn't thought about that. There's only two Tiger Macs that I own. The iMac and the server. Everything else is Leopard (or higher). Something to consider though.

Glad to know it's stable up there! :D

Ah, yeah, but those work too. :p Having it as a testing and repair station is a great idea! I wish I had an area to do that right now too, but I usually end up just making room wherever I need to depending on the hardware. NetBooting isn't nearly as useful if you only have one other machine, that's true. Something to keep in mind maybe. :)

So…2022. In February it will be two years since I started this thread. Have not done much since and the garage has only gone nuclear.

But I have restarted it and…there are changes.

It's still a mess, but at least I have major things placed, an idea of where things are now going to go and as I go, I am tossing some stuff. No one reading this should assume by the following pictures that everything I have set up will stay that way.

However, it bears mentioning that since Post #1, PowerPC receded into my daily use. Hence, except for the laptops for which I still have some purpose, they are no longer being used.

I am not ready to let them go just yet, as I intend to pull them out if I need them, but we may be getting there soon.

Note, the first pic: Ben's (@bunnspecial) Quicksilver G4 if I can ever get it shipped to him. That's the one I highly modified. G5's, left to right: 2.3DC, 2.5 Quad, 2.7DP.

Ahhh yeahhhh, the DC2.3 :). I think, if I can find one locally, that’s the final G5 I’d like to bring into the fold — ideally replacing the DP 2.0 I have which is on its way out.

I smell a future yard sale somewhere in the Arizona dunes…

Ah, no. I may find someone that X Mac should go to, but no garage sales. I hate that stuff and even more so now 'cause I'd have to jump through the HOA's hoops to do it.

It was sort of funny once though. I was doing the same thing (cleaning up the garage) at my old house. The nature of the thing means I almost always have to hall stuff out so I can move things around. So, I'd done that. Next thing I know, I turn around and two old people are picking through my stuff! Didn't see them even come up! I had to shoo them off because they thought I was setting stuff out to sell!

Private governance is a whole thing.

Damb… not even a sign announcing a yard sale, and they took it upon themselves to start rummaging through your stuff?!

Just start spraying a can of Raid, swing a fly swatter, and shout, “Now git, y’all varmints! Shoo! Scram!”

Very nice Eric!

That QS is the stuff of legends around here :)

Did I send you your Quad? I remember I came into 3 of them and a dual 2.7, and know I gave two away. I know where one went, and thought you had the other. Funny enough, I think I've only turned on the second once or twice, as I continued using the one I'd bought a few years before.

Those Dual Core 2.0 and 2.3s are great-faster and cooler than their comparable dual processor ones.

I used my dual 2.7 daily for a while always intending to get SCSI going on it. I never found an Adaptec card that would both play nice with the G5 and would work in 10.5(kind of the story of my life with G4s also...even the BTO bootable 2930CU doesn't work in Leopard at least in any way I found, and I know @LightBulbFun spent a while trying to get it) AND have ports for which I could find a cable. I never found one of the ATTO cards that were supposed to be Leopard and G5 friendly(or at least PCI G5 friendly) at a price I was willing to pay, and of course an OSX PCIe SCSI card is a unicorn. Since I use to do a lot of heavy single-threaded stuff with Carbon programs, the dual 2.7 was best, although later I gave up on SCSI and my MP 5,1 with its 3.46 Xeons(all 12 cores) would rip through single-threaded stuff even under Rosetta especially since it has 11 other cores to offload other stuff to.

Thanks Ben. It's still a disaster area, but working on it.

Yes, the Quad is the one you sent me. I sent you the 6500 in the Intel Mac tower box and you sent the box back with the Quad in it.

I am considering another G4 (or G3) for SCSI as well. I got a card with the 500mhz G4 that I took off someone's hands. Been wanting to turn that giant 11x17 scanner into a scanning station, but that scanner is SCSI and functions best on System7. I had my 11ci connected to it, but for some reason that won't start now. I suspect a battery has leaked, but I haven't had the time to look in to it.

Not exactly sure what I'm going to do with all of it just yet, but I know I won't be using them much. The garage is shaping up into a laptop and Mac Mini area.

Wow. I’m amazed to learn you have an 11x17 flatbed. Those don’t turn up often. What make is it?

HP.

ScanJet IIcx.

I got it sometime in 2002 when the newspaper I was working for was clearing stuff out. That's also when I got the Mac IIci.

It's the same scanner I used to use in design school, so I was familiar with how to get it working as it didn't come with any disks.

NICE. I remember those from some of the service bureaus I used to work for. They didn’t get used very often.

I’m guessing you’ve tinkered with SANE and also VueScan to see how nicely — if at all — it plays on an OS X Mac? Being they were SCSI, that would limit things to whichever Power Macs you have with a SCSI card.

No, the only Macs it's been connected to was a G4 at that previous job running OS9. It already had the drivers installed when I was hired. When I hooked it up to the IIci way back when I had to trace the drivers down on HP's site.

For the newspaper I was working at, they were still getting photos developed in 2000-2003. One of my jobs was scanning in photos. 11x17 made scanning several at once easier.

As I recall, you called it in Photoshop using TWAIN.

Hence why the G4 or G3 I may or may not be looking for. I hate OS9, but for one specific purpose I'd be okay with it. At least Kaleidoscope/BBX Mercury would make it tolerable.

Yep. That’s how one accessed scanners back then. Without TWAIN, you weren’t going very far.

Getting it to work with a build of OS 9, say on a G4 tower, might be the “bare minimum” you’d want for it, though flipping over to OS X, as a fallback, I wouldn’t put it past VueScan to get the job done, as well.

There's a very narrow and specific use for it (scanning RPG hand-drawn maps and docs of course) so I don't necessarily need a full design studio setup. I'm mainly just using it for the scan size. It's easier to scan stuff drawn on tabloid with a tabloid scanner. :D

As an archivist, I find there’s still a utility for an oversized flatbed. Here in town, our reference library is home to a zine collection dating back to the mid 1980s through the early/mid 2000s. Last time I visited it, the collection was physical-only still, not digitized.

An 11x17 scanner would fill the task of digitizing that collection quite nicely. It would also do well for digitizing other oversized media, such as original large format glass plates and possibly even Daguerreotypes. It wouldn’t, however, be ideal for, say, scanning album sleeve art, unless you were willing to manually stitch two impressions into one and account for edge lighting aberration (which would be a pain).

I'm a sucker for old scanners.

I'm guessing that if you dropped a SCSI card into a G3/G4 running Tiger and fired up Vuescan, it would probably work. It's a little bit ludicrous how many different scanners Vuescan supports.

Given that it's an HP, I was secretly hoping it had an HPIB interface :) . Only issue with that is that the only MacOS/OS X compatible cards I've found are a few select GPIB cards made by National Instruments. On the other hand, I have used quite a bit of Hewlett-Packard branded HPIB stuff, and it has been beyond me to get it to work with anything other than an HP/Agilent branded HPIB card. The only PCI HP card is the 82350, and they can be pricey(esp. for the Agilent 82350B version, which you need to work properly with P4 and newer desktops).
