I have mid 2012 MacBook Pro running Mavericks. I am trying to connect it to a Toshiba TLP-S10 projector. It displays only the wallpaper and the app bar. All other windows won't display. I've tried all of the connection options shown on the projector screen without success. The "Air Play Display" button in the system preferences is not detecting the projector. When it is plugged into the computer the app bar disappears from the MacBook but displays on the wallpaper image that is projected

It sounds like you have the projector set up as a separate display instead of mirroring your laptop's screen. Go into System Preferences-->Displays and click the "Arrangement" tab. Here you can turn on mirroring or (if you want two different displays) arrange them and pick which on the menu bar is on.
