I tried to hook up my powerbook G4 15" with a new Hitachi projector. The S-video function works fine, even over 10m of cable, yet the quality is less preferable as most will agree.

I tried to use a VGA cable (only other input option for the projector) using a small convertor DVI to VGA (not from Apple). Now the problem I probably walk in to is that I need to get an analog signal from my Mac which the DVI-port won't give. I get no signal at all at my projector, though when I plug the cable in, the screen flashes briefly blue, acknowledging some sort of recognition.

With my MacBook (Intel) I used an (official Apple) Mini-DVI to VGA convertor on a different projector without any problems. Could this mean the Intel macs do convert digital signals to analog themselves? Or perhaps that projector recognized a digital signal through its VGA (which doesn't sound very logical).

I hope there is a way to solve this problem within OSX. I read about these small convertor boxes that would solve these problems but I'm too far away from the Western world to lay my hands on one of those.

Hope some one can help me out.
