What would techically provide better battery life from everyday, non-heavy use,

ProMotion on so display can refresh low when needed, at the cost of going up to 120,

or locking it to 60Hz?

Because Apple’s is an adaptive refresh rate then keeping it ON is better than a constant 60.

Now if it was either 120 or 60 like in most Android phones then 60 would potentially provide better battery life.

Hmm,

Do you know of any tests to back this up?

Promotion off on my 13 Pro looks like a lower refresh rate than my SE 2022, which is 60hz.. I suspect it might be lower than 60 when turned off.

I haven’t experienced this,

Definitely feels the same as all previous phones when I’ve switched it off.

Pretty common knowledge if you’re in the world of display tech for phones or laptops. This is how Apple gets such great battery life because the iPhone dips down as low as 1Hz. However, iPads and MacBooks are slightly different as far as their lowest Hz.

Here’s an Android study on 120 vs 60Hz. Plenty more if you Google.

I find I get much better battery life when I limit the frame rate to 60 frames per second. I think you're getting the same kind of modulation – it tops out at 60 fps but still drops down to a very low frame rate. Scrolling and opening apps is still fast, though maybe not quite as quick as 120 fps and the difference is hardly noticeable. The ipad pro certainly benefits from promotion, but on the iphone not so much. It's a bit like the old emperor's new clothes story and the improvement in battery life is significant and absolutely worth turning it down to 60 fps.

I had the 13 Pro Max and compared between these two settings. The battery drains slower when ProMotion is turned off.
