Proper size HD for Clone

My 2010 iMac has a 1TB HD and I want to clone it. With 272GB in use, do I absolutely need a 1TB external drive, or would a 500GB drive work as well?
 
You don't need a 1 TB drive to clone and since you have so little in use, the 500GB should work
