So while we're all waiting for the new MPs I've been trying to come up with my optimal drive configuration/backup strategy for my new MP. I'm currently using my MacBook with (3) EyeTV Hybrids hooked up to records all my TV shows via HD OTA and then watching on my AppleTVs. So, I'm doing a lot of editing of commercials and then H.264 encoding which is why I want the power of a MP and lots of space and hard drive performance. So, here's what I'm thinking, please comment:
1) Probably buy the RAID card option, is this really worth it or should I just use the built-in software RAID or SoftRAID? I'm a little concerned about the performance and reliability of Software RAID versus Hardware RAID.
2) (2) 150GB WD Raptors in a RAID 0 for my boot/application volume. I will clone this RAID array using SuperDuper! nightly to an external eSATA (would need to add a card if not built in to the new MP)/FW800 320GB drive.
3) (2) Enterprise-class 750GB or 1TB drive (looks like the 3-platter Samsung drives are looking sweet if you can find them, other suggestions?) in a RAID 0 for my data/video. I would then backup this configuration to my Infrant ReadyNASNV NAS device that currently has (4) 750GB drives with about 2TB of storage available.
4) Another option would be to just go with (1) Raptor and (3) 750GB/1TB drives in a RAID 5 array? Thoughts on this compared with 2 and 3?
Thanks in advance for the help,
David
