On the 16 Pro (and now 17 Pro) Apple changed the file format in the DNG container to allow JPEG-XL in either lossy or lossless format when shooting ProRAW.

I tried searching the web for some discussion about comparisons between the two, and how much perceptible fidelity is lost (if any) when going from lossless to lossy, but I couldn't find much. Has anyone else had better luck? FWIW, JPEG-XL lossy files are less than half the size of lossless ones.

Tyler Stalman, a YouTuber who's also a photographer, discussed it on The Talk Show podcast just after the 16 Pro came out, saying he'd done some comparisons and couldn't see any degradation when using lossy, so that's what he recommends. But my photos are important to me — especially when I shoot in RAW — so I don't just want to take his word for it.

Also, does anyone know what the old ProRAW format was before this change, out of interest?

have you read thru this?

after getting my 17PM (came from 13PM) I am about to do a trial of Halide, for one I want true RAW (ProRAW is processed) and I want to control which camera and which resolution is being used. The stock camera app makes decisions for me and I don't like that. Yes, that means post-processing is required but I do that anyway with my DSLR.
