My last question for today! Haha

I've always used cases that have covers for the charging port but it has always bothered me how much pressure the covers put on the cord and port.

That being said, how important is it to have the port covered? Can dust, etc. getting in the port cause more damage that the port cover?

Thinking about just cutting the port cover on my case off but wanted to see what everybody thought.

Thanks!

Yes dust will eventually get into the port, but it will not cause any significant damage. At some point, you will not be able to insert fully the lightning cable, which means that you’ll have to remove dust with a toothpick or something similar. Not a big deal, and you have to do that maybe once a year. I had cases without a port cover for years and never had any issue.

None of my cases have had a port cover and I don't have any issue. It might be dependent on how much dust your phone is around.

Regular dust will cause pretty much no harm (never 100% anything lol) now if you are in areas where sand for instance may be a variable then possibly since sand is abrasive. In my experience with cases a lot of those that offer these port covers end up having a lot of dust build up around them and when you take them off to charge your device you will probably get dust in anyway.

Your best bet is just to get a can of either compressed air or a battery operated blower (they make a bunch of different ones with different tips for various devices).

Yea I don't think I ever had a dust issue. I had the moisture error but that would fade once it sat. The other issue I had was with the headphone jack when it existed. It was acting as if something was in it. Finally found a video showing to take the cotton off a QTip and rub it in there, and that fixed it

If it helps at all…I don't use cases. So, there's never been a 'flap' over the lightning port of all my iPhones that have this port.

Never been a problem. Of course, when I put my phones in my pocket, I put them in upside down so the port is facing up, so there is that. I don't want the port near any dust, lint or debris at the bottom of my pocket.

I've let my lightning port absolutely fill up with lint and it's caused no issues that couldn't quickly be remedied with a toothpick or other similar non-conductive object. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I accidentally waded right into a swimming pool with my iPhone 12 in my pocket last summer. It gave me some stern warnings about charging being disabled because of moisture, but it was all fine by the next day. I do wonder how well USB-C ports are going to cope with things like this.

Used an Otterbox case on my 12 Mini for around 6 months with a lightning port cover before moving onto an Apple Silicone case. I didn’t find it too annoying to remove to flap each time I had to charge the device. I do like that no dust/lint can enter the port because it’s covered up. It doesn’t realistically matter though as I have never had an issue with my port becoming clogged with dust/lint. I used my 6S for around 2 years and 8 for around 2.5 years with no flap and never had to manually clean the ports to get the devices to charge.

I've had to do that once or twice.

Once or twice over several years versus regularly or X amount of times a month/year.

Additionally, when I pull my phone out to answer a call or text, or just use the phone, all I have to do is lift my arm up. Because the phone is upside down I'm already gripping the bottom and when I bring my arm up I don't need to readjust my hold. The phone is in the correct position.

Works for me. 🤷‍♂️

Just cut the rubber flap off with an exacto knife. Cut the flap at the corner of the base and side.

That is what I always do with an Otterbox Commuter.

Honestly I’m guilty of upgrading 1-2 yr cycle. Never had an issue with the lightning port attesting dust.

For me I do have the dust cap on mine. I 100% use wireless charging on my 14 pro max. So my port is never used~

Since 2011, I’ve never had an issue with dust getting into the lightning port. I do have some flaps to use in the lightning port, which I’ve lost and can’t find them now.

I remember iPhone 4 and older iPhones with the iPod port were the ones that had the issue with dust.
