Hello everyone, just got a Macbook Air M1 is a good ideia to attach those hard cases on the macbook for protection apple sells one from Tech 21 not sure if this is a good idea or can damage the macbook in the long term anybody use it?
I think it's a pretty individual thing. Like iPhone cases, if you are a tradesman and likely to drop your phone or drop things on it like paint or tools then a solid protective case and screen protector is probably a good idea.
Likewise a MacBook cover so long as it's lined. A soft lining prevents the case from causing wear marks which some hard cases can do. I prefer the Sleeve type cases like this one; https://www.apple.com/shop/product/...6143ac1b41d81d563e3f3b344730ab2f0b2b493196cec
I like wraps/skins on my MBP. Cases retain more heat, even with those supposed venting holes and if/when any dust or other abrasive particles makes its way between case and laptop, it'll scratch it up eventually. Gotta periodically take the hard case off and dust it / air blast it and clean it inside and out. Lastly, the weight addition. Could add an extra pound or so to the weight of the laptop and its lightness/portability is one of the best things about it.
I have an Incase hard shell on my MacBook Air M1 and really like it. It fits perfectly, is not too heavy/bulky and has a texture that adds a good amount of grip.
I have found this hard shell to be good at protecting against minor dings and scratches, but beware of the random Amazon ones as they don't (or at least didn't) fit the M1 precisely enough.
You also need to be aware that dirt can get stuck between the case and the laptop which can then scratch the laptop so it needs a regular clean.

My experience too.
I really think you only need a protective case when you are not using the device. Hence my preference for the sleeve type case. For travel, the time it's most likely to be dropped, scratched exposed to liquids or pressure they're perfect.
