Proton today released its native Apple TV app, allowing users to access VPN services directly on their Apple TV following tvOS 17's introduction of built-in VPN support last year. The company has also announced compatibility with Apple Vision Pro.

The new tvOS app enables users to connect to ProtonVPN's network of over 8,500 servers across 112 countries, providing access to geo-restricted content while maintaining privacy from internet service providers. The interface has been specifically designed for television screens, according to the company, and features larger icons and remote control optimization for comfortable viewing on a television.

David Peterson, general manager of ProtonVPN, noted that the Apple TV app was "one of the most expected and requested features" from their community. The service promises 4K streaming capabilities without buffering or throttling.

The app is available to subscribers with paid plans, including Proton VPN Plus, Proton Unlimited, and Proton Visionary. Users can download the app directly from the App Store on their Apple TV.

I am very surprised Apple allowed this into the store. Wouldn't this essentially mean users can change locations to access different streaming services offerings?

use it for what? watching youtube?
Streaming services have different offerings depending on the country you're in. A VPN lets you pretend you're in a different country so you can watch programming that's not available in your country. In some cases, you can watch programs that are exclusive to a service in the US but may be available bundled with another service, ie., Disney programming might be available on Netflix in other countries.

sounds useless. does it mean you can watch shows from other regions? What benefit does vpn have for appletv?
it’s actually incredibly useful. i live in mexico but use a vpn on my appletv to watch youtube tv, netflix, max, peacock, and everything else from the united states. i was thrilled when they added the vpn option in 17.

Brilliant. Proton VPN is great, having a native App makes it so much easier to deal with the VPN needs on an Apple TV. Previously I had to do some awkward work around on my router to do that just for the traffic from the Apple TV but that isn't as easy to switch on/off at will.

For example, if you live, or have a holiday home, in a geo restricted area. In our case, I have a paid subscription to Formula 1, but their app is blocked in the UK, but I can use it elsewhere.

^ Yeah, there's that... :p

But I was thinking - though not making it clear - that I would be trying it with a paid plan, because without that I cannot really choose which country I want to connect to... :)

Edit: Related question: Is BBC iPlayer available on Apple TV?

Does simply using AppleTV as my interface hide my use from Samsung? Or, would I also have to enable a VPN?

Lots of geo restricted services.
In the UK Formula 1 is through SKy TV only so it’s a rip off but use a VPN and you can subscribe to the official F1 channel in Holland for example and pay much less and it’s exactly the same as UK Sky feed, even same commentators.

It was added to a tvOS by Apple a couple of years back….keep up 😂

It's right there in the third sentence...

"The new tvOS app enables users to connect to ProtonVPN's network of over 8,500 servers across 112 countries, providing access to geo-restricted content while maintaining privacy from internet service providers."

There are already at least a dozen of VPN apps for Apple TV. Proton VPN is just the last one introduced today.

Besides, it was already possible to use their servers with some manual work through Passepartout app.

For us Americans, quite so, but for the rest of the world, it's a god-send.

The ramifications are such as an increased familiarity with US culture by allowing access to native apps to the US (UK = SKY instead of MAX), Colombia (Latin American countries = some other app in lieu of Disney+).

It's BIG for people that don't live in the US.
