I was just looking at the gallery on Apple.com and I noticed the area where the proximity sensor is on the white iPhone looks different and is more noticeable. What is the reasoning behind this?

The phone is white, think about it.

I noticed that as well, and have no clue!

I think I read somewhere that they're physical holes in the glass...can't be sure but it would make sense.

Same proximity sensor, you just can't see black on black too well in a normal picture, let alone on a digital image created from scratch. Go into your local apple store, put some light on the top, you'll see the proximity sensor.
And yes, it'll be the same sensor from the black iPhone. The only different pieces will be the front plate, back plate, and home button.

I have a black one and notice the sensor in the sun under the transparent glass. Maybe they had to put those holes in since a white transparent glass would reflect too much light.
