PS CS4 freezes when opening raw files

after opening and closing a few RAW files (CR2 or NEF), PS freezes on opening a RAW file, get the exclamation point in the ylw triangle in the image box. entire 'puter locks up. tried reinitializing preferences, adjusting preferences, reload CS4, etc., no help. doesn't seem to be an issue when opening multiple jpgs.....any suggestions?
