If I were to buy the 40GB PS3 (I want the 60GB one, but they no longer sell it). Since the 40GB PS3 doesn't have memory slots on it can I plug in a USB card reader and access an SD card that way? Also I know that the 40GB PS3 doesn't have the chip for running PS2 games (and the website says it's not backwards compatible) but is there some kind of software emulator that one could install and run them that way?

--Thanks

you would be better off to get the first gen 60gig on ebay

they have hardware emulation for ps2 games

and supports all games

newer ones (80gb) is only software emulation, and on top of that some games dont work at all

Eh a PS3 is not something I want to buy used and I can manage without PS2 games, but how about those memory cards?

EDIT: What about USB flash drives?

bit of an oxy moron. If it has hardware then it isn't emulation ;)

OP.

Yes you can use any usb memory card reader in theory. (I add in theory because I'm just taking sony's word for it and haven't tried).

No - no software emulation either on the 40gb model.

Yes like MRU said you can get an external card reader and your good to go....maybe sony will update the 40s through an update to run PS2 games(I think it can run PS1 games right from the start)

If you want that PS2/PS3 combo your best bet is to find the 80gig....the major games still play on it...I think its 80% emulation(correct me if I'm wrong)

Bless

i'm not so much in the know with ps3s, so forgive my ignorance. but..why can't one use the hard drive for storage?

It does for ps1/ps2 games.

Your confusion arrises because you think the OP wants to use console memory cards which is wrong.

He wants to use as SD card, hence he needs a memory card reader.
