Hi everyone,

here's the current state after factory resetting an Apple TV 2nd generation (A1378)

  • Restoring the device in Apple Configurator works (connected with USB)
  • Activating the device in Apple Configurator does not work
  • Logging into iTunes or Home Sharing with Apple ID is not possible (tried all tricks with generating an authentication code on my mac)
  • Logging into iCloud Photo Stream (with appending the generated authentication code to the Apple ID password) results in an error that iCloud Photo Stream is not activated (no wonder because it's long gone), but the device shows up in my Apple Account device list
  • Connecting to modern WiFis with WPA2-PMF (Protected Management Frames) or WPA3 is not possible
For me I can't imagine any uses other than an Air Play 1 device connected to ethernet (or WiFi with reduced security which I won't do) and using the optical audio output.

All or some of the above might also apply to an Apple TV 3rd generation according to multiple posts on Apple's support forums.
